From November 12 to 15, the JCU Gladiators traveled to Barcelona for the WIUC Tournament, one of the most important international events bringing together universities from across Europe.
For many of our student-athletes, it is the highlight of the fall semester—a chance to compete abroad, strengthen team bonds, and proudly represent John Cabot University in Rome, whether they are study abroad or degree-seeking students, on an international stage.

Organizing this trip was no simple task. Coordinating teams, schedules, logistics, and competition details required careful planning and constant communication. Thanks to the exceptional teamwork between the Athletics Staff and coaches, as well as the exemplary behavior of our students—now a united and mature group shaped by years of shared sports experiences—the event unfolded smoothly and successfully
An International Atmosphere from Day One
The atmosphere in Barcelona was immediately vibrant. Students from universities in Spain, Italy, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and beyond filled the venues with energy, creating an environment that blended competition with cultural exchange. For our Gladiators, the opening day was a chance to settle in, reconnect as teams, and take in the unique excitement of an international tournament.

Men’s Soccer: A Confident Path to the Quarterfinals
The men’s soccer team approached the tournament with focus and determination. Throughout the group stage, they showcased disciplined defense, smart ball movement, and strong communication, earning a well-deserved spot in the quarterfinals. Their run, marked by tactical maturity and resilience, stood out as one of the key moments of the trip.

Women’s Futsal: Effort, Grit, and Growth
Facing a highly competitive group, the women’s futsal team battled through fast-paced matches and technically strong opponents. Although they did not advance beyond the round of 16, their performances revealed determination, courage, and continuous support for one another, qualities that define the Gladiator spirit.

Men’s Padel: A Promising Start

The men’s padel players opened the tournament with confidence, winning early matches thanks to strong coordination and quick reflexes. As the level intensified, the experience proved to be an important learning moment, helping the team sharpen their focus and adaptability for future competitions.

Tennis: Competing with Heart
JCU was represented in both the men’s and women’s singles tennis brackets, as well as in coed doubles. Despite facing opponents with extensive competitive backgrounds, our athletes played with grit, composure, and intelligence. Their rallies and teamwork – especially against the skilled pairings from Lebanese American University – were commendable and demonstrated our players’ determination to rise to the challenge.
Cheerleading: A Silver Medal to Remember
One of the brightest highlights of the WIUC Tournament came from our Cheerleading Team. Their dynamic routine, combining synchronized choreography, high-energy stunts, and impressive stage presence, captivated the entire arena and earned them an outstanding second-place finish. Their silver medal was a proud moment for the entire Athletics community.

A Tournament of Growth, Sportsmanship & Looking Ahead
This year’s WIUC Tournament highlighted the values that define the Gladiators: heart, resilience, and unity. Every student, regardless of their final result, returned to Rome enriched by the experience, both personally and athletically.

The lessons learned in Barcelona will now guide us through the season ahead. As we step back into the Rome university championships and prepare for upcoming international tournaments, we hope to bring the same spirit, determination, and teamwork that shaped our journey in Spain.
Go Gladiators!
