From JCU Gladiators to NCAA Coach: Claudio Buratti’s Journey

John Cabot University is proud to celebrate the achievements of former Gladiator Claudio Buratti (Class of 2022), who has just been named Assistant Coach for the Merrimack College Women’s Basketball Team in Massachusetts.

Claudio was a key member of the JCU Men’s Basketball Team during his time in Rome, bringing determination, teamwork, and passion to the court. After graduation, he pursued his dream of coaching basketball in the United States — a dream that has now brought him to the NCAA Division I stage.

Reflecting on his years at JCU, Claudio shares:

“My time at JCU was terrific. The opportunity to blend in and build relationships with American students gave me the chance to get to know the American culture like never before. That definitely prepared me for my current career and life in the States. I’m also still in contact with most of the people I met at JCU, and I frequently hang out with the ones living in Boston or nearby.”

Claudio’s new position with Merrimack marks his first coaching experience in women’s basketball — and he couldn’t be more excited:

“Coaching NCAA Division I basketball has always been my dream and goal. I just signed a contract with the Merrimack College women’s basketball team. It’s gonna be my first women’s basketball experience and I’m really excited about it. Honestly, my goal for the future is being able to stay in this country to do what I love. I know this industry is constantly moving, so I can’t predict my next move. So far I love Merrimack.”

When asked what advice he would give to current Gladiators and aspiring basketball professionals, Claudio doesn’t hold back:

Put yourself out there. No one is gonna knock on your door. Build a good network and be annoying with that. Text people and remind them of your goals. You’ll find someone who’s willing to help you eventually. JCU is a great stepping stone to do so. Also, be prepared to tackle any challenge. Any path you will decide to take is not going to be linear or easy, but with perseverance and passion you’ll get through everything.”

From the courts of Rome to the NCAA sidelines, Claudio’s story is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the opportunities that begin at JCU Gladiators. We wish him continued success in his coaching career and look forward to cheering him on — just like old times.
