Coach Spotlight: A Conversation with Coach Ion

For over a decade, Coach Ion has been a cornerstone of the JCU Gladiators program. We sat down with him to reflect on his journey, leadership style, and the exciting path ahead for the team.

You’ve been with us for several years now. How would you briefly describe your journey at JCU?

“From time to time, I look back and realize just how fast these ten years have flown by. What truly makes me aware of the time that’s passed are the many relationships I’ve built with the players. I’m still in touch with many of them, and for that I’m incredibly grateful.
Being able to watch them grow, not only as athletes but as people, and see them find their path in life brings me real joy. That personal growth has always been a fundamental part of my work.”

People say you have a strong personality. Does that help when managing the team?

“Yes, I live football the same way I live life: always at full intensity. That sometimes makes me a bit… exuberant 😁
At my core, I love seeing my teams play with personality and character. I hope that energy reaches the players. Whether it truly works or not, though, you’d probably have to ask them 😁”

How is the collaboration with Coach Franceschi and the rest of the staff?

“My relationship with Coach Franceschi has grown continuously over time. I got to know him step by step. He’s someone with strong values and, above all, great loyalty – something that’s rare nowadays.
He’s a collaborator I truly couldn’t do without. We complement each other very well because of our different personalities.
With the rest of the staff, the relationship is excellent, even if I constantly push everyone to keep growing as a staff 😅”

The team has had a strong first semester. Did you expect this, or was it a surprise?

“The team has been working extremely hard this semester. What we’re seeing now is something we started building last season, so it’s not a surprise, on the contrary.
We’re building this together with the players, and they’ve done an amazing job creating a strong, healthy group. Now the key is not to settle. They need to stay hungry.
Without sacrifice, nothing can be achieved.”

What is the main goal for this season, and what about the future?

“Our goal for this season is to consolidate what we’re building and continue on our growth path. What we achieve will be exactly what we deserve.
As for the future, I’ve learned that looking too far ahead doesn’t always help. My future is today. I’m fully focused on this season and on giving everything I have to these players: they deserve it.

We’ll write the future together, hoping to keep growing and strengthening our identity year after year.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone working behind the scenes: Michele, Peppe, Carlos, Flavia, Max, Elena, and Marco – as well as the entire John Cabot University staff for their constant support.
Being equipped with the Veo system is a dream come true. I had been asking for it for a couple of years, and I’m certain it will help all our teams become more aware and continue to grow.

Go Gladiators 💙
