JCU Gladiators Launch First Beach Clean Up Day and Remove 37.6 kg of Waste

On Friday, October 9, the JCU Gladiators hosted the first-ever Beach Clean Up & Beach Volleyball Day, bringing together students for a day centered on environmental responsibility, community engagement, and outdoor activity.

While gray skies set the tone for the morning, they certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the participants. Students showed up ready to make a difference, joining forces to clean the beach and help preserve the local coastline. Working together throughout the day, volunteers collected an impressive 37.6 kg of waste, a tangible result of their commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment.

The event was designed to combine Community Service with recreational sport, with a Beach Volleyball Intramural Tournament planned for later in the afternoon in collaboration with Beach Volleyball Academy. Unfortunately, worsening weather conditions and an approaching thunderstorm forced organizers to cancel the volleyball portion of the event to ensure the safety of all participants.

Despite the unexpected change of plans, the day’s success was measured by much more than the weather. The clean-up brought students together around a shared purpose, demonstrating how small actions can have a meaningful impact when a community works collectively toward a common goal.

Fortunately, this is not the end of the story. The Beach Volleyball Intramural will take place on Friday, November 23rd (SIGN UP HERE!) at Monteverde Club. We look forward to returning to the sand with our partners at Beach Volleyball Academy and giving students the opportunity to enjoy the competition and community-building experience that was originally planned.

The inaugural Beach Clean Up Day marked the beginning of what we hope will become a valued Gladiators tradition, one that combines sustainability, wellness, service, and school spirit.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped remove 37.6 kg of trash from our coastline.

We can’t wait to see everyone back on the beach soon, hopefully with sunshine, volleyball, and the same incredible Gladiator spirit.
