JCU Gladiators Conquer the Inaugural Rome Half Marathon!

The energy was electric in Rome last Sunday as thousands of runners from around the world took on the city’s historic streets for the first-ever 21K Half Marathon of Rome. Among the dedicated runners was a fierce delegation from John Cabot University – true Gladiators. Representing the university with pride, JCU students Sebastian, Alonzo, Edoardo, and Lucio demonstrated exceptional determination and resilience as they tackled the scenic but challenging 13.1-mile route through Rome’s iconic landmarks.

The event, held on October 20, gathered an incredible number of participants, adding to the sense of camaraderie and motivation among the athletes. The Rome Half Marathon showcased some of the city’s most breathtaking sights, creating an inspiring, unforgettable race environment. JCU’s Gladiators were more than up for the challenge, channeling their signature Gladiator spirit to overcome both physical and mental demands of the race.

Gladiators Reflect on the Race

Lucio, one of the four JCU runners, shared some words on what it felt like to complete such an intense and transformative race.

Running the half marathon in Rome was for sure an amazing and a very formative experience. The incredible number of participants made the event much more special for me. Personally, running the half marathon was a way to challenge myself. It was really tough, but I am very proud of what I have done

For Lucio, the race was not just a test of endurance but a reminder of the power of self-challenge and dedication, proving that resilience can carry you through even the toughest of tests.

Alonzo, another JCU Gladiator and a first-time half marathon runner, also reflected on his experience:

The Rome Half-Marathon was an awesome course that saw many of Rome’s most famous sites. This was my first race over 5k, and I’m glad I had such amazing scenery to distract me from the pain of the 13.2 miles. I hit my goal of sub-90 minutes and felt that amazing sense of accomplishment that only crossing a finish line can give you. The field was pretty crowded, especially starting in the last wave, but it was inspiring to see so many people putting in the work! Special thanks to the man in the Spider-Man costume who was blasting music out of a speaker strapped to his back.

Alonzo’s experience highlights the unique aspects of the Rome Half Marathon – both the sense of shared effort among participants and the joy of experiencing Rome’s beauty and culture up close. For him, crossing the finish line was the reward for weeks of preparation and dedication, made even more memorable by the atmosphere and his personal achievement of breaking the 90-minute barrier.

A Heartfelt Thank You to the JCU Gladiators

Congratulations to Sebastian, Alonzo, Edoardo, and Lucio for proudly representing JCU and showing true Gladiator spirit on the challenging streets of Rome!
