January & February Recap: Gladiators Charging into the Final Stretch

As we move toward the decisive phase of the Campionato delle Università di Roma, the JCU Gladiators varsity teams have been battling week after week with determination, resilience, and plenty of standout performances.

⚽ Men’s Soccer: Eyes on the Champions University League

With the group stage nearing its conclusion, several of our teams are in strong positions to aim high — and in some cases, dream even bigger than last year.

Here’s a look back at how January and February unfolded for our Varsity Gladiators.

The spring semester officially kicked off on January 28 with a home match at Trastevere Stadium against Link Campus University, and the Gladiators delivered immediately. JCU secured a 2-1 victory, defending home field and setting a confident tone for the second half of the season.

February brought an intense stretch of fixtures:

  • A 2-1 win over UniCamillus (home)
  • A 0-0 draw against LUMSA (away)
  • A narrow 3-1 loss to LUISS (away)
  • A composed 2-0 home victory over Sapienza
  • A dominant home match win 4-0 against Campus Bio Medico

With multiple key wins at home and valuable points collected along the way, JCU remains fully in contention as the group stage enters its decisive phase.

This season carries special significance. After winning the Europa University League last year, the Gladiators are now going to compete in the more prestigious Champions University League. Securing qualification for the knockout stage would mark another historic milestone for the program and confirm the team’s growth at the highest level of university competition in Rome.

The final stretch of the group stage will be decisive, and the Gladiators are right where they need to be.

⚽ Women’s 5v5 Soccer: A Statement Season

If there’s one team turning heads this year, it’s our Women’s Soccer squad.

February results speak loudly:

  • A commanding 12-1 win over Sapienza
  • A confident 21-0 victory against UNINT
  • A narrow 4-3 loss over Rome City
  • A smashing win 13-0 against Roma Tre

The team has combined attacking firepower with defensive discipline, putting itself in an excellent position as the group stage wraps up. With momentum on their side, the Gladiators are strong contenders heading into the decisive matches. The prospect of a deep playoff run is very real.

🎾 Tennis: Consistency Paying Off

Our Tennis team has quietly built one of the strongest campaigns of the season.

February results include:

  • 2-1 win vs LUMSA
  • 3-0 win vs Sapienza
  • 1-2 win vs Link Erasmus
  • Important win 2-1 against Roma3
  • 2-1 win vs Campus Bio Medico

With multiple key victories and solid performances across the board, the team is well positioned in the standings. As we approach the end of the group stage, Tennis remains firmly in contention for qualification… and possibly more! After winning last year’s second place in the Europa League, we now confidently expect much more!

🏀 Basketball: High-Scoring Battles

Both basketball squads faced intense matchups throughout February.

Men’s Basketball delivered exciting performances:

  • 31-35 vs Sapienza (narrow loss)
  • 63-32 win vs Cattolica
  • 69-43 win vs Campus Bio Medico
  • 54-34 win vs UniCamillus

After early struggles, the team found rhythm and closed the month strongly with three convincing victories.

Women’s Basketball showed grit and competitiveness, considering this is our real brand-new team in the varsity sports program. Unfortunately, the team lost the matches so far, but they never gave up and keep fighting like true Gladiators.

  • 20-81 vs Roma City
  • 32-90 vs Rome City
  • 65-40 vs Link Erasmus

Keep pushing and practice hard, and the hard work will play off!

🏐 Volleyball: Competitive Spirit

Our Volleyball team have continued to fight in every set, but still looking for the right pace to take over the opponents. As they played against Unicamillus, Roma3 and Link Erasmus, unfortunately our Gladiators have not managed yet to take a win home.
We encourage our Volleyball team to look ahead and focus on practices, as there are still some matches to battle for!

🎾 Padel

Padel saw mixed results, including a strong 3-0 win over Link Erasmus and Cattolica, and competitive matches against Roma Tre (loss 0-3), and Rome City winning 2-1.

Keep up the good work, Gladiators!
Last year you brought back home a great Europa League trophy: make us proud also this year!

📣 Cheerleading: Power, Progress & Unmatched Energy

The Gladiators Cheerleading team has taken a major step forward this semester. With the addition of two male athletes to the roster, the squad has been able to elevate its technical level significantly, incorporating more complex choreography, impressive group stunts, and dynamic partner stunts that were not previously possible. The result is a routine that is more powerful, visually striking, and athletically demanding than ever before.

The team’s growth is no accident. The group trains consistently and with incredible focus, showing noticeable improvement at every single practice. Their commitment, discipline, and teamwork are translating into stronger execution and greater confidence on the floor.

On Wednesday, February 11, the cheerleaders delivered a standout performance at the Pep Rally during the home basketball and volleyball games. Performing in front of the crowd, they raised the Gladiators spirit to another level, showcasing their explosive energy and debuting a beautiful, high-impact choreography that perfectly captured the passion and pride of JCU Athletics.

With their momentum building, the Cheer team continues to prove that they are not just supporting the Gladiators: they are an essential part of the Gladiators identity.

The Road Ahead

The Campionato delle Università di Roma is now entering the final phase of the group stage. According to the current standings, several JCU teams are well positioned for qualification.

  • Women’s 5v5 Soccer looks poised for a strong playoff run.
  • Men’s Soccer is battling for qualification in the prestigious Champions University League, a remarkable opportunity after last year’s Europa University League title.
  • Tennis is firmly in the mix and building momentum at the perfect time.

The coming weeks will define the season. What’s certain is this: the Gladiators are competing with heart, ambition, and belief.

Stay tuned: the best may be yet to come.

Go Gladiators! 💙
