Wednesday, October 28th, officially marked the opening of the new JCU Gladiators athletic season.
The opening night brought a mix of fierce competition, hard-earned team cohesion, and genuine athletic drive across all programs. Playing on home turf, with both soccer teams and cheerleading taking over Trastevere Stadium and basketball defending the home court at Oratorio San Paolo, the energy in the stands was evident.
Packed crowds turned out to support the teams, showcasing the strong community bond and lively Gladiator spirit that defines John Cabot University. The Gladiators set a clear standard for the season ahead.
Men’s Basketball: Dominant Opener Sets Tone Despite Late Lull

The Men’s Basketball team launched their season with an assertive 69-37 victory over rival American University of Rome. The Gladiators came to the game with high focus and intensity, overwhelming AUR in a dominant first quarter that ended 38-6. High-pressure defense set the tempo early, yielding over five steals in the opening period alone as JCU presented its aggressive transition play.
While the significant early lead led to a slight decline in momentum over the remaining quarters, the team closed out a plausible win to secure its first result of the season. With an important matchup against Rome City approaching on Monday, November 2nd, the team remains focused on maintaining that high-level intensity.
Most Valuable Player: Justin Betts was named MVP for his standout performance in leading the team on opening night.
Men’s Soccer: Building the Foundation on Opening Night
The Men’s Soccer team stepped onto the pitch for their highly anticipated season opener against the well-structured and talented Rome City team. Season openers are never simple. Integrating new tactical ideas while building match fitness takes time and patience, but the Gladiators met the challenge with determination. They put on a generous and determined performance where every player gave everything for the shirt, refusing to back down against the opposing team.

Throughout the match, the groundwork laid during pre-season training began to shine through. The team executed tactical principles with confidence, demonstrating that the foundation is strong and that the squad is on the right path to building real momentum in the championship.
However, the game was deeply impacted by a serious injury to key player Gianmarco Isidori. The entire John Cabot athletic community stands firmly behind Gianmarco as he begins his process of recovery.
Head Coach Ion shared a direct message of support for Gianmarco:
“We all wish him the absolute best of luck, and we will be right by his side throughout this journey.”
Most Valuable Player: Gianmarco Isidori was named MVP for his outstanding performance on the pitch prior to his injury.

From the opening whistle, the team showed clear communication and an uplifting spirit that made them look like a group that had been playing together for years. The hard work put in over the last couple of months was transferred directly on the field, offering fans a glimpse of a competitive, unified team ready to make a substantial statement in the league this season.

Cheerleading: High Energy, Big Ambitions, and Bratislava Bound

Showcasing the results of hard-working practice sessions, the team delivered a memorable performance to all of the supporters and set the tone for the entire athletic department.
The excitement went beyond the routine itself, as Maximus the Gladiator took the field alongside the rival team Rome City’s mascot for an entertaining mascot battle that excited the crowd.
This showcase provided an exciting preview of what the Gladiators are preparing to bring to the upcoming World InterUniversities Championship in Bratislava. By pushing their physical boundaries, perfecting new routines, and aiming for higher standards, the cheerleaders proved that their dedication and squad bond is already strong.

The Head Coach Elena Gregori shared her pride and ambition for the journey ahead:
“We are learning more and more every day, pushing our limits and growing stronger together. There is still a lot of work to do, but our team spirit is already high! So proud of you, girls!”

Giving Back: The Maximus Raffle
In addition to the action on the courts and fields, the evening highlighted the Gladiators’ commitment to the broader community through the Maximus Raffle. Fans and supporters bought tickets throughout the night for a chance to win official JCU merchandise. The Maximus Raffle united the crowd in the stands even more, creating an opportunity for fans, athletes, and students to rally around a shared cause beyond the sports arena. All proceeds raised from the raffle will go directly toward JCU Community Service initiatives, supporting local communities in need and with the true spirit of giving back.
