Abruzzo Experience

Saturday, Oct. 13- Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018
Cost: €190
Deadline to sign-up and pay is by 5:00pm on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018

On Saturday, we will visit Scanno Lake, which is located in Abruzzo, in the upper valley of the river Sagittarius, originated by a landslide from Mount Genzana, between 12.820 and 3.000 years ago, that crossed the river Tasso. It is located halfway between Villalago and Scanno, and it is the largest natural lake in the region. We will spend the day hiking along the beautiful paths surrounding the lake.

We will reach Frattura Vecchia, a ghost town that was abandoned in 1912 after a heart quake. The village of Frattura was built on the divide (hence the name, since “frattura” here means rift, divide) was generated by an earthquake that blocked the Sagittario river and formed the lake of Scanno. We will get back from the hike and have a dinner in a local “agriturismo” on Scanno Lake.
On Sunday, we will move to Sulmona. Sulmona is not only known for being the native town of Ovid and for being elected as UNESCO heritage sites, but it is also the home of the Italian confectionery known as confetti. These are sugar-coated almonds and are traditionally given to friends and relatives on weddings and other special occasions. We will visit the beautiful mountains that surround this region by a special train, the Italian Transiberiana, which connects Sulmona to Isernia. The railway was an important link between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Born in 1897 and closed to passenger service in October 2011, “Le Rotaie Association” of Isernia worked to avoid final closure. After a trial phase, tourist journeys saved the railroad from definitive closure and brought over 30,000 travelers in 3 years, first by the number of passengers in Italy. The “Transiberiana d’Italia” project became an example of tourism management for small countries and rail lover associations.
